Bitcoin and the GOP
What the GOP must do to stay politically relevant
If you needed another reason to look at Bitcoin as a functional currency in order to bypass the stranglehold of the state, here’s another one to add to the stack.
We only need to look north to see how the banks have played their hand and shown that at the drop of a dime, they are really agents of the state.
By restricting and freezing the banking access of Freedom Convoy activists, the Canadian government has lumped them in with mobsters and terrorists, making peaceful protest and free speech the equivalent of a national security threat. We’re at a point now where popular sites like GoFundMe now make no qualms about shutting down campaigns for causes they disagree with, and even going as far as to seize the donations.
While banks showed their true colors and “private companies” behaved more like robber barons, there was one hero that withstood the challenges of these concentrated powers- Bitcoin.
In early 2021, political commentator and host of the On The Run Podcast, Remso W. Martinez, pointed out in the aftermath of the January 6th protest at the Capital that the next stage of Cancel Culture and political persecution would be to restrict and limit access to one’s money and even essential banking services.
“Changes from a new administration, new laws regarding money laundering and cryptocurrency regulations all would compound upon each other and we would at least have a trail to look at,” said Martinez. “Instead, the attacks on your money are happening now. Businesses and individuals (such as former president Donald J. Trump) have lost access to payment processing services, and have had their bank accounts shut down and access to basic banking services denied.”
Now, populists and supporters of individual liberty have to really assess whether to continue to run from or finally accept Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as a true hedge against intrusive government abuses. Politically, this alone would be a huge moment for the GOP to take the side of Bitcoin, especially as most conservatives are in favor of the Freedom Convoy’s activism and we’re drawing closer and closer to another tough midterm election.
Instead of giving the same scripts a re-read by flapping their mouths about generic tax cuts and the like, Republicans need to shift their focus to seize the opportunity by standing on the side of Bitcoin, even going as far as to stand against Biden’s recent crypto-legislations and targeted tax cuts for cryptocurrencies.
From a civil libertarian perspective, this approach would bring to the table young, pro-crypto independent voters who are distrustful of central powers, seek more privacy, and understand its strength against corrupt fiat money. Populist strategist Tho Bishop pointed out this obvious fact on Twitter recently, taking things a step farther by advocating for the elimination of taxes on silver and gold as well.
This isn’t just a pipe dream; elected GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has publicly endorsed the use of cryptocurrencies to bypass corrupt governments as well.
As the government attempts to seize more Bitcoin, and now are creating a FBI task force specifically to follow digital assets, this tense time could deliver bold Republicans an immense opportunity, if they’re smart.
