Ending Affirmative Action is a Win For Authentic Equality
Counteracting the reigning narrative, an end to affirmative action emerges as a potent stride towards bona fide racial equality. Harking back to the 1960s, affirmative action— a product of the Civil Rights Movement— was conceived to extend education and employment opportunities to minorities who had long been side-lined through government sponsored racism. Although the initial intentions may have been considered honorable, its long-term ramifications seem to have strayed from the mark, ironically fostering a variant of structural inequality that it sought to annihilate in the first place.
Firstly, this policy by its very design categorizes individuals based on their racial backgrounds, thus indirectly breeding state-sanctioned racism. The cornerstone of equality advocacy shouldn't be the allocation of treatment based on racial identities, but rather the recognition of individuals' merits, skills, and capacities. Only through such measures can we tread the path towards true equality.

Furthermore, affirmative action can inadvertently tarnish the accomplishments of minority individuals by casting an unshakeable shadow of doubt over their achievements. Each minority admission or promotion under affirmative action's ambit is potentially viewed through the lens of scrutiny, leading to questions about its merit versus policy-induced accomplishment. This 'stigma of incompetence' phenomenon risks shaking self-confidence and brewing resentment among peers, thereby aggravating societal discord.
In addition, evidence suggests that affirmative action might not benefit the socioeconomically disadvantaged minority members it was crafted to uplift. Instead, it often aids the already privileged ones. For instance, racial preferences in higher education have disproportionately favored African-American and Hispanic students, while conveniently sidestepping the systemic hurdles that impede the educational progression of their less privileged counterparts.
Critics might argue that ending affirmative action would lead to a decline in minority representation. However, this view overlooks the deleterious effects of 'mismatch,' a concept proposed by law professor Richard Sander. Sander argues that affirmative action can place students in academic contexts where they lag significantly behind their peers in terms of preparation, resulting in higher dropout rates, lower grades, and eroded self-esteem.

A superior approach would involve policies focusing on socio-economic factors, rather than race. Such measures would tackle the systemic disadvantages encountered by low-income students of all races, fostering a more comprehensive spectrum of diversity and inclusion. This strategy would accentuate equality of opportunity rather than guaranteeing outcomes based on racial classifications, thus facilitating a more organic form of integration within educational establishments and workplaces.
To sum up, the dismantling of affirmative action paves the way for America to adopt a more sophisticated approach to diversity and inclusion. An approach that perceives all Americans as individuals rather than racial collectives and also confronts the roots of educational and economic disparities.
The pursuit of racial equality is untenable via policies that deepen divisions and gloss over socio-economic realities. It's high time America evolved its tactics in its pursuit of genuine equality.
