Shoveling Cash Into the Ukrainian Meat Grinder
That war in Ukraine is still going on, in case you forgot. The interest among regular Americans seems to be down but don’t tell that to the media. Every network still dedicates some time to the Russo-Ukrainian conflict and odds are if you go on Facebook or Twitter right now, you’re gonna see some folks who still have the Ukrainian flag on their profiles.
What does all this virtue signaling mean though? Americans are speaking out and talking about the impact of inflation, the rising costs of gas and food, as well as another year of supply chain shortages reaching ridiculous levels most thought could never get as severe as they have.
Seriously, do even those who think we need to do more in Ukraine actually want to do as much as they say?
How much can they do so they don’t have to do anymore?
The truth is, virtue signalers among us just pass along that responsibility to the worst types of people, such as the politicians and war machine in Washington D.C.
A recent piece at the American Conservative shows how the U.S. and others are just pumping billions and billions of dollars into a non-NATO ally:
But the Ukrainian government believes it will take much, much more aid to rebuild the country. As if their victory is a fait accompli, the Ukrainians have called upon Western nations to support a $750 billion plan to rebuild the country at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Lugano, Switzerland on Monday—the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a Russian victory in Luhansk. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said the $750 billion project would primarily be funded by assets seized from Russian oligarchs and government officials, but those assets will only go so far.
What is all this really about? Who will this go onto serve?
According to Politico, the people who wanted a conflict between the nation’s before Russia even set foot into Ukraine:
Even before Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine earlier this year, lobbyists representing pro-Ukraine interests in Washington throughout 2021 were in the midst of a lobbying campaign of an unprecedented scale, according to a new report published today examining the U.S. lobbies of Moscow and Kyiv in the lead-up to the war.
— The report from the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft analyzed domestic lobbying disclosures as well as documents filed with the Justice Department’s FARA Unit and found that lobbyists for Ukraine reported more than 13,000 political contacts last year as Ukrainian interests sought to scuttle Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline and pushed for military support and to potentially join NATO.
— In the same period, lobbyists for Russian interests reported just 21 political contacts under FARA, while taking in $42 million versus Ukrainian lobbyists’ $2 million. Differences in how each country’s interests registered their influence efforts mean that it’s difficult to compare the two accurately — for instance, much of Russia’s reported spending ($38 million) went toward operating state-owned media outlets like RT and Sputnik.
Understand this; the people who were rich before this situation will only become richer, while the working poor continue to drown under these domestic and global conditions.
This isn’t about Ukraine, this isn’t even about Russia. This has everything to do with global elites recreating the global economy and political order once again.
