The Strange Death of the Anti-War Left
Crisis moments in politics tend to be moments of clarity. They demonstrate who are our friends and who are our enemies.
Those who hate the color red today will scoff at the same color once their opponents start to wear it. Whether the topic is vaccines, school choice, civil rights, you name it, given the right circumstances people will flip in a heartbeat.
Even the Russo-Ukrainian war, a military conflict thousands of miles aways, has demonstrated to Americans who actually serve the interests of regular people.
Who are those who are willing to sacrifice domestic safety and economic stability at home so that we can support a government that two years ago we were calling corrupt?
American politicians, celebrities, and the media it seems are perfectly alright with using working Americans as fodder if it means more social virtue signaling.
The unholy duo of Neocons and neoliberals have done their usual routine waxing poetically about vague abstractions such as “liberal democracy,” “human rights,” and “rule of law.”
Yes, then-Vice President Joe Biden can ask the President of Ukraine to fire a public official investigating his son’s illicit business affairs by also threatening to withhold American aid, but that’s not corruption, that’s perfectly acceptable.
Heck, some people will tell you that conversation you can easily find video of didn’t even happen. Even if you play the clip right in front of them, they’ll shrug their shoulders and say it doesn’t even matter.
“Russia bad, I have a Ukranian flag in the Twitter bio now” the NPC will say.
So-called progressives from Ro Khanna to members of the media anointed Squad have all dropped the ball on foreign policy when they voted for a massive $40 billion aid package to Ukraine.
The Left’s lackluster foreign policy voting records during the Russo-Ukrainian conflict is not an isolated incident.
Marxist commentator Michael Parenti noted that even Bernie Sanders has very mainline views on issues of foreign policy. During a question and answer session back in 2015 in which he was asked about Bernie Sanders, Parenti cited Sanders’ vote for a Senate Concurrent Resolution (which then-Senator Joe Biden supported) that granted the president the power to carry out air operations and missile strikes against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1999.
Parenti said “he's [Sanders] standing shoulder to shoulder with NATO and the CIA and the White House and Bill Clinton.”
Parenti continued by noting “That’s when I broke with him” and stopped sending contributions to Sanders’ future campaigns altogether.
Towards the end of his talk, Parenti described Sanders as a “liberal Democrat” and not much of a radical on the issues that mattered such as never-ending wars.
Parenti’s suspicions were well-warranted. Sanders’ recent vote for a massive military aid package confirmed Parenti’s statements.
Even during the 2020 campaign trail, Sanders’ campaign hinted at using military force against Iran in a New York Times survey that was sent to his team.
The third question in question asked the Sanders team, “Would you consider military force to pre-empt an Iranian or North Korean nuclear or missile test?”
The Sanders campaign replied, “Yes.”
Judging by this response, Sanders indicated that he’s willing to continue the Bush era doctrine of “preemptive war.”.
When the campaign was also asked, “Would you consider military force for a humanitarian intervention?”
It responded, “Yes.”
Several of the wars the US carried out in the name of “human rights” include the Bosnian war and the aforementioned bombing campaign against Serbia in the 1990s along with the aerial campaign against Libya in 2011 and the regime change efforts in Syria during the Civil War.
People wonder why the Left is no longer anti-war. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that rank-and-file left Democrats no longer feel the danger of being drafted.
On top of that, the US media and the Deep State have been able to successfully brand America’s adversaries as “fascist” which is catnip for many sectors of the mainstream Left.
Plus the use of “humanitarian intervention” has become more prevalent during interventions in Kosovo, Rwanda, Somalia, and Haiti. The use of the “humanitarian” label is a clever way of making interventions more palatable to leftist segments of the electorate.
At this point, it’s America First populists slowly taking over the Republican Party who will restore sanity to American foreign policy. The Left can no longer be trusted on this issue.
