The US Needs to Stay Away from the Russo-Ukrainian Conflict
As the United States prepares for a future that is absent from the conflict in Afghanistan, the military industrial complex looks onward to see where the next opportunity is to shed American blood and treasure. For years they have pushed us towards a potential collision with China, but for now everything seems to be ushering us towards a more immediate conflict with Russia.
With the Russian military posturing to take Ukraine by force any day now, the world watches to see how the United States will respond.
The tone towards Russia has teetered between friendly and openly hostile the last two decades. The Bush administration enjoyed a tempered peace for a time, especially during the early days of the occupation of Afghanistan and the invasion of Iraq. The Obama administration held the sword in one hand in public while offering peace with the other, often putting on a different face regarding Russia policy depending on the crowd they were trying to appeal to.
During the Trump administration, Democrats often called for explicit and direct action to punish Russia in order to keep the phony “Russian collusion” hoax alive. While Trump was stern with Russia, especially in regards to the civil war in Syria, he was fair towards the rival superpower on more than one occasion.
Specifically in regards to Trump, he had provided lethal aid to Ukraine in the form Javelin missiles, but his presidency did not pursue idealistic measures like trying to goad Ukraine into a conflict with Russia, a conflict that it would most likely lose. Barack Obama, despite all his neoconservative policies, was correct in noting that Russia has escalatory dominance in Crimea, and did toss American forces into that situation.
As President Joe Biden attempts to assert he has verbally threatened Vladimir Putin, many Americans remain skeptical of whether the threats of force would actually be acted upon. While the history of Joe Biden’s public life shows that he is more tepid than stern, an ego-driven POTUS focused on legacy building might be negatively swayed by hawks such as GOP Senator Roger Wicker, who has foolishly called for a nuclear first strike, which was even more ridiculous than Biden’s vague threats of force.
It is simply high time for the U.S. to let Russia and Ukraine sort their own problems out. A clear headed leader in an ideal scenario would perhaps need to sit down and make it clear that NATO will no longer be expanded, something even the Clinton administration was initially divided about.
As a result of irrational anti-Russia hysteria driven by both Republicans and Democrats, Russia has been pushed into the arms of China and is now entering a strategic axis (China, Russia, & Iran) to challenge American hegemony in the form of Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The US should focus on the Western Hemisphere, secure its border, crack down on violent drug cartels, and human traffickers.
The Ukraine-Russia conflict is for Russia and Ukraine to handle, with other European actors taking on the matter and other future matters in their own backyard.
