People in America aren't necessarily numb, they just have no idea what's actually going on. There's no reporting in the media about the truth of the matter, many Americans are busy and not watching the news all of the time, and the government lies incessantly about what's happening. I do think they count on numbing us, but I think people would be enraged if they knew the truth. Most Americans just don't. Also, the material prosperity of many Americans is still at a level where they feel like they don't have to care about what's going on. If we suffered a real economic shock or depression, that would change in an instant. It would be "Dog eat Dog" in a nanosecond.
