What the Russia-Ukraine Conflict Shows About Bitcoin
A wise man once said that people don’t go to war, nations and the politicians go to war. It just so happens that the people have to die and fight in them. The situation in Ukraine is no exception.
Within a matter of weeks, we have witnessed banks and other corporations go to war on behalf of NATO. The global provider for financial messaging services, SWIFT, has cut off Russia from conducting any time of international finance. VISA, Mastercard and American Express have also cut off all services to Russians as well.
Pictures can be seen online as Russian civilians are crowding banks trying to get as much cash out as possible. As of this writing, the Russian ruble is worth less than a penny.
Across the border in Ukraine, Ukrainian refugees have found themselves cut off from their own banking institutions and assets as a result of the Russian attack, separating them from their physical and electronic assets and commodities essentially making them penniless overnight. As many flee to foreign nations as beggars, now the conversation regarding the true value and ownership of money has come into play.
According to a recent story from NBC, this conflict is playing out to be a turning point in the history of cryptocurrencies as a whole, and global markets are watching.
The article states that on “the Ukrainian side, digital coins have lived up to their reputation for easily moving money across international borders,” since unlike cash and precious metals, a crypto-wallet can easily be accessed from a mobile device or activated from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. “Sympathizers with the Ukrainian cause have raised the equivalent of more than $54 million through cryptocurrency donations.” This rallying behind crypto as a way to circumvent hostile governments comes not even a month after Bitcoin was used as the financial means of fueling the Freedom Convoy protests in Canada after Prime Minister Trudeau began to freeze bank accounts for those involved.
“But on the Russian side,” the article continues, “the supposedly borderless form of money has instead collided with the reality of international sanctions spurred by a major European conflict – and also the moral question of whether participants in the crypto markets could unwittingly help fuel a war of aggression or help Russian oligarchs preserve their wealth.”
With that question, we see the corporate press showing their hand; when the side we like uses Bitcoin, that is good. When the side we don’t like uses Bitcoin, that is bad. All Ukrainians are painted as victims while all Russians, oligarchs or not, are war-participants whether they supported the invasion or not.
What does this mean for the poor and working class? What does this mean for those who were innocently going about their lives but they can’t work because they’ve been cut off from global markets? They can’t afford the price of foreign goods because they’d have to walk in with bushels of cash like in Weimar Germany or Venezuela?
Globalists and their media and corporate pawns are transgressing on the very inherent human right to transact voluntarily and peacefully.
The lesson to be learned is that when governments and corporations go to war, they will starve a civilian population and destroy their ability to receive the goods and services they need.
They say the age of total war is long dead and gone, but it isn’t. It has somehow just become less gruesome and more sophisticated, just like the elite like it.
They don’t have to bomb you anymore, they just have to starve you.
